Despite frequent warnings about the poor security in the IEEE 802.11b (Wi-Fi) standard, more private networks are broadcasting than ever. There are good reasons for this. In this talk we will cover a survey of the uses, security concerns and best-practice implementation suggestions for a Wi-Fi Network. We will also review solutions targeted for intrinsically safe manufacturing environments for mobile technology. Finally, we will end with a look to the future, where is Wi-Fi going and how fast is it moving.
John is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for Omicron Consulting. He joined Omicron in 1989. As CTO, John’s responsible for supervising all aspects of the technical development and network projects. Over the past ten years, John has led the development of Omicron’s Independent Software Vendor (ISV) Practice. This business unit assists companies by creating new and next generation software products for commercial resale. John is the lead author of Understanding BizTalk, the first book released on the subject and the concept editor of BizTalk Unleashed. John is a national keynote speaker as an authority on Microsoft and XML technologies. John has worked with OSIsoft technology for the past thirteen years and attended almost as many user conferences. Before joining Omicron, John worked for IBM for seven years at The T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY as an internal consultant for lab automation to the research staff. John holds a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Lehigh University.
