SUBNET to the PI System: A Bridge to Support Business Use Cases
PPL Electric Utilities in eastern PA with more than 1.4 million customers made a significant investment in FLISR in the past few years across its electric distribution system. PPL installed thousands of overhead Reclosers to automate power restoration and reduce the impact and length of power interruptions to its customers.
A FLISR project involves various types of field devices, the most important ones are reclosers, device controllers, and communication devices. The utility deployed more than 7000 devices from various vendors. All of them configured to report DNP3 unsolicited data over a cellular network through the SUBNET system. The goal of this project was to connect SUBNET to the PI System to support key business cases leveraging maintenance data from the field devices to monitor condition and other diagnostic parameters.

Alan is an Asset Information Analyst in the Distribution Asset Investment Strategy team for the past 2.5 years. His primary function is data projects centered on Distribution equipment health models and the PI System. Alan develops and implements PI use cases for various business lines in Distribution Operations.
Ben Smith maintains, supports, and creates software at PPL related to Energy Management Systems. These systems bring in 100’s of 1000’s of data points from field devices, which are used to support operation and maintenance of the power grid, plan future improvement work, and more recently to automatically switch line configurations to minimize the number of customers impacted by unexpected outages. His work includes creating interfaces between systems and users using the telemetered data. PI is one of the primary tools which is interfaced with this data and has impacts across the board, such as helping to plan effectively, operate safely, and maintain the grid efficiently.
