Many of our customers in the Mining and Metallurgical Industries are large consumers of ENERGY, Water and Assets. These plants are usually remotly located requiring a strategic approach to use human resources. A strategic initiative was designed to collect and integrate this information in Competence Center. The process and equipment information strategy is contextualization of real-time and transactional data using an asset model of the process operations. The OSIsoft PI Asset Framework (AF) was selected as the platform for the asset models. The asset models abstract raw data into a format that has physical meaning, including all relevant meta-data. This provides a solid platform on which an information system can be built. The quality of the raw data is poor in many instances, so there is a need to validate it before using it for process and business decisions. We will review current EA Implementations from our customers that are implementing new ways of running Mining and Metals companies around the world. We will share many of soft and hard issues getting to where we are.
Dr. Osvaldo A. Bascur is MMM Industry Principal with OSIsoft. His contributions have been in the design and implementation of a blue print for real time enterprise information systems to reduce operating costs and improving energy and water management. He was process control supervisor with Duval Corporation (now Freeport McMoRan). He worked 10 years for Pennzoil Products Company (now Shell) prior to joining OSIsoft, LLC (Number 32 employee). He is actively involved in the optimization of mineral processing, metallurgical processes for increasing asset availability, reducing energy, water consumption and minimizing environmental emissions. He has dual BS degrees in chemical and metallurgical engineering with a PhD degree specializing in optimization metallurgical processes from the University of Utah. He has more than 70 publications. He has contributed in developing several SME, IFAC and IMPC proceedings. He is the editor of Latin American Perspectives: Exploration, Mining, and Processing published by SME. He is member of the SME Operating Best Practices, IMPC organizer, APCOM, AIST Computer Application Member, EMC Lecturer. He is an active member of AIChE, SME, ISA, IFAC, and AIST.
