Distance to Fault – The PI System and ESRI Geospatial System Supporting Real Time Operational Decision Making
This presentation will explain how Transpower leveraged the PI System and the ESRI Geospatial platform to get real time fault information on their 11,803 KM of high voltage lines. Having this information available and displayed against real time weather and lightning data provides Transpower with the capability to make quick operational decisions. Dimension Software designed and implemented a fully automated PI System based solution to calculate complex fault locations based on live SCADA feeds. The calculated fault locations are displayed geographically and in real time on the ESRI platform. Grid control staff are then able to use this real time information to support their decisions when faults occur on the Grid. The presentation will cover the move from a manual process to a fully automated process, the operational decisions that the solutions supports and the architecture of the solution.
Hasthrika Jayasuriya is an applications analyst, and has been working at Transpower New Zealand for the past two years. He provides support and administration of Transpower’s asset management systems which includes PI System, CRM, and various other custom solutions.
Neil Goundar is a Software Engineer and has been building software solutions for over a decade. He has developed software solutions across various industries and has extensive knowledge in building desktop applications, web applications, server side engines/calculations and Sharepoint solutions. Neil joined Dimension Software almost 5 years ago and has been working with all aspects of the PI System. His expertise of Software Engineering and the PI System has seen him develop software solutions across the Electricity, Oil & Gas, Water, Mining and Pulp and Paper industries in his time with Dimension Software.
