Faced with a downturn in gold prices and rising exploration costs, Barrick Gold,like others in the industry, was under pressure to reduce operational costs. Barrick believed the best way to do that was to improve its utilization of operations and business data. A team inside Barrick believed that by signing an Enterprise agreement (EA) with OSIsoft and better leveraging their existing PI System™, the company could improve utilization of corporate data and dramatically reduce operational costs. But signing an EA would require a large, unbudgeted, capital expenditure at a time when the company was focused on cutting costs.
In 2015, Barrick Gold produced approximately 6.12 million ounces of ore with more than 75% production coming from the Americas region. Their Goldstrike mine is the most prolific gold-mining district in the Western Hemisphere and includes the Betze-Post open-pit mine, a truck and shovel operation, and the Meikle and Rodeo underground mines. Ted Olsen-Tank described how the PI System enabled Barrick Gold to operate more efficiently while complying with strict environmental regulations.
Bharat Light & Power (BLP) owns and operates 200 megawatts of renewable energy projects in India. To manage these assets, BLP developed the proprietary Orion platform, built on top of the OSIsoft PI System. Balakrishnan G. Iyer, Chief Development Officer, discussed BLP's new managed services operation, which enables other renewable energy companies to tap into the real-time data and predictive intelligence.
Biogen is a leading developer of drug therapies for neurological and neurodegenerative diseases. Headquartered in Cambridge, MA, for nearly 40 years, the Biogen team has worked to combat the effects of diseases such as MS, Alzheimer's and spinal muscular atrophy. Biogen is in the process of rolling out its Aducanumab drug, which is designed to treat the symptoms of Alzheimer's. Phase 1b results noted that the drug significantly slowed the decline in Alzheimer's patients, giving hope to the over 25 million people around the world who suffer from the disease.
Caterpillar is a 90-year-old company that manufactures heavy-duty iron equipment that ranges from engines to diggers to bulldozers. With a slogan of “Built for It,” Caterpillar prides itself on delivering high-quality products so its clients can see return on investment. However, in a digital age, return on investment is no longer limited to equipment functionality, especially for marine vessels. It's about using sensor data from those assets to improve vessel performance and maintenance strategies. With the help of the OSIsoft PI System, Caterpillar created Cat Connect to apply analytics to raw vessel data and turn it into actionable information.
CEMEX, famous for producing cement, has also been in the power industry since 1998. In 2014, the subsidiary CEMEX Energía was created with the dual purpose of reducing electricity costs and CO2 emissions for cement production through renewable energy and allowing CEMEX to take advantage of opportunities in the worldwide energy market. At the 2017 OSIsoft Users Conference, Roberto Carlos Medrano discussed how CEMEX Energía is leveraging the PI System and OSIsoft Connected Services to support cement production; improve wind farm operations; increase visibility into wind farm power production; and track performance for warranty and service contracts.
