A New Approach to Plant Performance Improvement
The Iberdrola power facility in Spain has achieved greater stability, reduced risk of shutdowns, and increased production by leveraging the real-time data in their OSIsoft PI System. New tools and methods have been used to extract high value from the PI data. Specifically, Iberdrola has used PlantTriage performance supervision tools from ExperTune to analyze the entire facility, and focus engineering resources on the most economically important process and control issues. This presentation shows how these tools and methods were used, and indicates the bottom-line value delivered by leveraging real-time data from OSIsoft's PI system. Significance: Through a methodical approach, the team has reduced plant variability, eliminated the source of upsets, and improved dynamic response.

María José Aniorte is I&C group coordinator in the Monitoring Diagnostic and Simulation Center (CMDS) of Iberdrola, Spain. This center provides specialist engineering support to Combined Cycle power stations within the company’s fleet and third parties. Since 2004 she has been working to improve and increase automation in the power plant control systems of the Iberdrola fleet. Before that, she worked on I&C erection and commissioning in Combined Cycles. She also worked a year in the University of Cartagena (Spain) on robotics.
Antonio Calvo is an I&C Engineer in the Monitoring Diagnostic and Simulation Center (CMDS) of Iberdrola, Spain. This center provides specialist engineering support to combined cycle power stations within the fleets of the company and third parties. Since 2006, he has been working to improve and increase automation in Iberdrola power plant control systems. Prior to the power industry, he worked at a petrochemical company in the Operation and Process Department as a process control engineer taking part in the start-ups of new plants and units and deploying solutions to increase productivity.
