Achieving Scalability and Grid Measurement: Using PI for Wide Area Grid Monitoring (WAMS)
After the August 2003 blackout, Entergy has aggressively implemented the WAMS (Wide Area Measurement/Monitoring Systems) across four states for its high voltage transmission grid. The solution is to use the PI System, to get the synchrophasor data directly from PMUs (Phasor Measurement Unit), 30 samples per second, via PI’s IEEE C37.118 Interface, perform the advanced analytics (including real-time calculations, FFT-Fast Fourier Transform, early alarming on instability or oscillation, etc.) and deliver the intelligence to the operations and engineering in an enhanced visualization format. The presentation will demonstrate utilizing the PI System’s standard tools, great performance and system scalability to achieve the wide area monitoring and protection, with accurate grid measurement, and to prevent grid instability and cascade collapse.

Mr. Galvan, a licensed professional engineer in Texas, is a senior project manager for Research & Development at Entergy Corp. His areas of specialization include phasor measurement and control, grid visualization, applications of phasor measurements, long-term planning and regional energy pricing. Mr. Galvan has worked throughout the industry in various areas including system planning, fuels procurement and wholesale energy forecasting. He has held leadership positions within the DOE EIPP and CERT, and has served on numerous panels and committees at the NSF. He received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M and a M.A. from Southern Methodist University.
