PI-Based Performance Monitoring System
Online performance monitoring systems are valuable applications for power generation companies. These systems calculate and store vast amounts of equipment thermal performance information, which can be used to immediately detect equipment performance deficiencies as well as provide both local and remote ongoing equipment monitoring and troubleshooting capability. In addition, performance monitoring system data is often consulted to determine equipment maintenance/overhaul outage schedules and associated capital spending. Calpine has developed a custom PI-based performance monitoring system for the combined cycle power plants in the Calpine fleet. All of the major equipment within the plant is effectively monitored and historically archived including the gas turbine and steam turbine prime movers, associated generators, heat recovery steam generators, condenser and cooling towers. Calpine's PI-based performance monitoring system is being leveraged to effectively benchmark and compare similar equipment across Calpine's fleet. This capability allows Calpine to identify, quantify and realize equipment deficiencies and improvement opportunities resulting in a significant competitive advantage in increased unit and plant capacity, availability, and reliability.
