Trains Students and Monitors Mesalands Community College Wind Turbine
SAN LEANDRO, CA–(December 12, 2009) OSIsoft (www.osisoft.com), providers of the PI System®, the industry-standard enterprise infrastructure for management of time-series data and events, has donated a PI System and 30 client licenses to the North American Wind Research and Training Center (NAWRTC) at Mesalands Community College. The gift was valued at approximately $230,000.
“Our PI System is used worldwide on wind farms for monitoring and will give not only students but researchers real-time and historical data to use in monitoring turbine performance and reliability,” OSIsoft CEO, Dr. J. Patrick Kennedy said during a presentation at Mesalands’ campus.
Kimberly Musgrove, a wind energy student at Mesalands, says she was impressed by Dr. Kennedy’s presentation on the PI System. “I honestly was amazed to hear from Dr. Kennedy about the many capabilities of this software,” Musgrove said. “It will definitely help us in our future careers.”
Officials at the college noted that many wind farms utilize complex advanced data monitoring systems, making their PI System an ideal educational tool. The PI System at NAWRTC collects information from 500 data points, including the temperature, wind speed, current and voltage output, mechanical, electrical, and vibration of the center’s 1.5 megawatt wind turbine. Data will be analyzed for trends to be used in preventive maintenance. OSIsoft also donated 30 client applications for Mesalands students to use. These licenses enable them to monitor 20,000 actual or calculated data points.
According to Dr. Phillip Barry, president of Mesalands, the PI System is the essential ingredient for research on the college’s turbine. “This donation will allow the college to begin implementing the research portion of the North American Wind Research and Training Center,” Dr. Barry said. “It will provide sophisticated data that can be used in research applications in major national labs such as Sandia and major universities across the US”
