Nalco’s Journey Into Wireless Data Collection Using Windows Mobile Devices

Get Microsoft Silverlight

With hundreds of customer sites monitored and serviced, NALCO sales engineers use hand-held devices for data collection from field assets and on-location laboratory testing. For any given asset being monitored, approximately 80% of all of data used needs to be manually collected. This data includes the results of wet chemistry testing (pH, conductivity, ion concentrations, etc.), field instrumentation (temperature, pressure), and even physical observations (clarity of water, etc.). The field data is then combined with on-line monitoring applications and DCS information to provide a full picture of the health and performance of the asset and create actionable tasks for improvement. Lack of access to computers on the NALCO domain from remote customer locations presents unique challenges to the manual data collection effort. This presentation will explain how NALCO is deploying Windows Mobile devices with a phone based data connection to collect manual input data for thousands of points in hundreds of different tours using PI Manual Logger and PI Manual Logger web services.
