The PI System can be used to better understand process and production constraints so that production can be increased by streamlining processes and identifying bottlenecks. As an example, one chemical plant used data collected by the PI System to identify several problems that caused the unstable operation of a liquid phase reactor. The catalyst stripper was flooding due to excessive reactor steam, which was caused by low catalyst activity and an undersized return pipeline from the stripper to the reactor. It was also determined that the steam traps on the reactor were too small, causing condensate buildup in the reactor jacket. To resolve the problem, additional catalyst was added and the steam to the reactor was reduced.
