Operational Intelligence in Pipeline Natural Gas Transmission

Gas Atacama transports natural gas from wells in Argentina to industrial clients and power plant generator in Northern Chile. The gas pipeline runs for 1200km traversing the Andes mountain and the Chile desert. Control stations are installed along the pipeline with valves and compressor
stations. A satellite-based SCADA system collects real-time data with a remote control center located in Santiago, 5000km from the pipeline. The PI System plays a crucial role in the pipeline management. Besides the reporting and visualization functions, advanced ACE/MDB functions will
be described where online models of the pipeline, the main control valves, and the compressors are implemented. This allows the operators and engineers to compare the actual operation against the desired or standard patterns providing early alerts for deviations as well as scenario analysis.
