The Spanish electrical sector has undergone a profound change after Law 54/1997 of 27 November came into force, changing the structure from vertically integrated companies to separate companies. Ordinarily, generation plants must sell their production and complementary services in a marginalist spot market. We need to manage generation in an international arena and to develop new power stations based on natural gas rapidly. The ratification of the Kyoto Protocol and its effects on the emission of greenhouse gases present new challenges. The systems strategy being followed by UFG, supported by the Open CENtrales (OCEN) project, will be described, in which the OSIsoft PI System is the fundamental part for obtaining information. Our presentation will describe key benefits that have brought about the use of the PI System in UFG.
