In a multi supplier market, over or under production by a generating unit can be costly. Using process data from over 50 generating units across 16 sites, this system provides the unit operators with a real-time view of the commercial operating status of their generators along with a predicted generation imbalance for the trading period. Developed using Module DB, ICE and ACE as well as traditional API development, this system is proving to be a very effective tool in an ever expanding toolbox.

Charles O'Neill BSc MICS Charlie began his ESB career in 1974 as an electrical apprentice before moving on to specialize in control and instrumentation systems. Graduating in computer science in 1998 made him a prime candidate for the Operational Information System project which saw ESB install their first PI system in late 1998. Charlie became one of the key players, delivering a pilot system that led to PI becoming the preferred data historian throughout the ESB. His remit now encompasses overall responsibility for the development, support and maintenance of the PI systems currently in place, and the Information Systems that are built on top.

Malcolm Bates
Malcolm Bates BSc(Hons) C.Eng MBCS Malcolm's career has followed a somewhat different path to Charlie's. A life change saw Malcolm graduating in the mid 90's, and since then he has worked for specialist process management companies alongside major blue-chip client in locations as diverse as Africa, Australia, India, USA and former Soviet states as well as Europe and the U.K. Malcolm has been working with the ESB for the last 4 years, and in October 2003 he made the leap and formed his own company, Process informatics Ltd., to provide a support and development resource to the worldwide PI community.
