Diagnostic and Predictive Maintenance Applications of PI at the NASA Glenn Research Center

This presentation deals with diagnostic and predictive maintenance applications of the PI system that was installed as part of a Y2K upgrade at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland Ohio. Cost savings resulting from the use of PI to diagnose problems with high pressure compressors used in support of the major wind tunnels and propulsion test facilities at NASA Glenn are described. Through the use of PI Performance Equations (PE), predictive maintenance is optimized on major equipment, resulting in minimum downtime. A comparison will be made between the use of PI-PE and PI-ACE for this function. Applications of PI to provide operator process screen playbacks of archived data will also be presented.

Speaker
John Mihevic

John is Manager of the Central Process Control Systems at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. He is responsible for the center-wide distributed control system used to monitor and control 13 electrical substations and the equipment that provides compressed (40 thru 1250 Psig) air and altitude (to 90,000 ft) exhaust for a wide variety of experimental research and development programs. John received the NASA Medal for Exceptional Service for his work on the computer controlled systems that support the major wind tunnels and propulsion test facilities at Glenn. He was District Vice President for ISA - The Instrumentation , Systems, and Automation Society from 2000 thru 2001. He has a BS in Electrical Engineering and an MS in Mechanical Engineering from Case Institute of Technology.
