• United States CTO, Aneesh Chopra, presents at OSIsoft-Microsoft Executive Summit

The OSIsoft – Microsoft Executive Summit, held October 26-27, 2011 in Washington D.C., focused on leveraging real-time data to drive systemic energy and water efficiencies across industrial value chains. The thought-provoking case studies presented at the event provided a forum for industry leaders and executives to discuss the importance of leveraging real-time data and how it’s fundamentally changing their business practices.

Aneesh Chopra, the first chief technology officer of the United States, was among those to present at the Executive Summit. He discussed the President's Strategy for American Innovation and highlighted the importance of crowd sourcing innovation in today’s data driven world. In his presentation, Mr. Chopra discussed how this strategy will spur innovation and promote long-term economic growth. He highlighted how groundbreaking new endeavors like Data.gov have encouraged politicians to ask new questions such as, “what other data should we be collecting?” The plethora of information available on Data.gov, including energy and manufacturing statistics, has spawned communities of interest that are now able to participate in government by building applications, conducting analyses and performing research in ways that were never before possible.

  • Mr. Chopra also discussed how the concept of crowd sourcing innovation, combined with the legal authority of Congress, has allowed the United States government to reach innovators in every corner of the country. The ability to host challenges and promote competitions has created an alternative channel for innovation that brings bottom-up ideas to market. By using technology to embrace the spirit of open innovation, Mr. Chopra’s office is able to find new talent to address the challenges of the country and has the potential to fuel American success into the 21st century.

Ms. Rachel Kleinfeld, chief executive officer and president of the Truman National Security Project and Truman Education Institute, also provoked a stimulating discussion at the 2011 Executive Summit. Ms. Kleinfeld discussed how the Truman Project is responsible for educating policy makers, politicians and military members with the goal of providing these three tribes with a unified outlook on the world. In this presentation, Ms. Kleinfeld focused on the issue of energy security and stressed the importance of innovation around alternative fuels and energy delivery systems in the private sector to limit the vulnerability of the United States during natural disasters, economic downturn or acts of terrorism. A number of topical panel discussions were also moderated by OSIsoft executives during the event. Each of the topics—high performance facilities, industrial energy management, water management—were discussed by representatives from a variety of professions including professors, engineers, corporate executives and advisors to give attendees a holistic view of these challenges.

The 2011 OSIsoft – Microsoft Executive Summit challenged industry leaders, executives and policy makers to not only discuss industry trends and directions, but also to consider data at a new level. Data can no longer be used solely for historical purposes and reporting. Organizations and professionals alike are now challenged to develop a new analytical skillset. Part of this new reality requires organizations and professionals to understand the context of these datasets, make insightful decisions and attempt to predict future events to create a new level of readiness for what may come.
